Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2026 -Didn’t subject myself to the full marathon this year (although now I wish I had) but rather the 10k and 5k races. Getting 2 medals for running 1/3 of a marathon distance seemed like a smart loophole for bragging rights. -I didn’t run alone this year either as I had Mhairi alongside me for the 10k. We both ended up setting the exact same times, crossing the line hand in hand. -Amazingly, I still had enough energy for the 5k just an hour afterwards. The pack were a lot more spread out which meant I could properly stretch my legs and go for a fast time. My aim was to run under half the time of the 10k. I think I achieved that and then some! -Of course we had to recover with a McDs, a tradition by this point.

Today back in 2016 marks one of the very few times I can use as an example of ‘where were you when X happened?’ I remember where I was, what I was doing, the people around me when the news broke that Prince had passed on. I was at uni and heard a couple guys near me talk about it. That news unsettled me but I didn’t know why. 2016 was a particularly grim year for celebrity deaths and we were only a third of the way through it. I remember checking social media in the coming hours, days, even weeks later. Seeing famous figures pay tribute and landmarks washed in a purple glow. I felt grief for everyone else’s grieving. I lot of people know me as a big Prince fan today but back in 2016 I barely knew who he was. Growing up, I naively thought of him as “the other Michael Jackson”, having never actually listened to his music outside of a Batman soundtrack cut. His endless catalog of albums weren’t readily available online so I couldn’t educate myself for a long time. But when I did it was over for everyone else. I didn’t listen to anything but Prince or Prince-adjacent for a solid year, mostly because there was soooo much to discover. I could’ve listened to a different album everyday and only have to loop back to the beginning after about two months. Then I found out that every musician and their dog was influenced by Prince so I started listening to them too to hear the connections. He was an artist for his time and for all times. A beautiful one. 💜
